Happy EMO New Year

(1) This is the first time I post anything that is not black-and-white. Well, it's because my baby brought me crayons while I was doodling on my sketchbook. So I was like, why not, it's almost New Year, let's add some colors :)
(2) no these aren't goths. they are just emos.
(3) Happy New Year!

elephants and bats and everything else

one day you ("I," I mean) doodle like this,

another day you ("I" again) doodle like that...
but anyway, kids' drawings are awesome. I've learned ("stolen?") so much from them.

cool eyes

I saw a traditional Korean mask in Incheon Airport and thought the way eyes were drawn on the mask was pretty cool. That's it. I just wanted to try those eyes @_@

Armadillo

well... I guess I just kind of miss Gainesville, Florida (where I went to school) when I draw an armadillo...
and when I miss Florida, I listen to this song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=krnnErGzIsY
(Against Me! is a local Gainesville band that I liked.)

Carnet de Voyage, Clermont-Ferrand, France

Oh, right, I am in Clermont-Ferrand right now participating in Carnet de Voyage, a travel art show. It's the first time for me to show my comics work to people - in person - who are not my editor (duh) or my close friends. I have met many nice (and cute and pretty and handsome and funny) people here just on the first two days...

Anyway, to see some photos and get some updates, please visit: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10106011555651101.1073741847.2065555&type=1&l=59bf341026

arts fun with kids (I meant, art is fun especially when done with kids)

While in the Philippines this May, I also did these (see photos) with my non-adult friends quite a few times. I L~O~V~E~ doing fun and creative things (or, as 5-yr-old Araw calls them, "project!" ^_^) with kids. They help me see, perceive, and imagine some truly awesome things.

p.s. I'm not being gender-biased; That house (complex) really is FULL OF boys :p

sketchbook while traveling

This June and July, I left the place where I currently live (Guam) for the place where my spouse grew up (Metro Manila, Philippines) and the place where I was born and raised (Taiwan) for about six weeks - 1 month in the Philippines and 2 weeks in Taiwan. I guess you can call this "traveling." When I travel (and actually, even when I'm not traveling), there's always a sketchbook and pens in my backpack. I hesitate to call what's in my sketchbook "travel sketches" because most of them aren't really sketches; they are just doodles. I mean, while typical "travel sketches" contain drawings OF the things seen during the trip, the pictures in my sketchbook do not. These drawings in my sketchbook could come from:
(1) me playing ("experimenting" sounds too serious) with a new pen
(2) me trying to create/design characters for a comics story I'm making
(3) yes, things I see during the trip
(4) something that reflects my moods or thoughts over something that happens during the trip
(5) a memory, or an idea that binds the present and the past, that is probably triggered by something that happens during the trip
(6) a memory, or an idea that binds the present and the past, that is probably triggered by something that happens during the trip but not IN the trip. For example, while I was in the Philippines, I called my family in Taiwan and heard news that affected me emotionally, and so the next thing I drew in my sketch book was about me reflecting on the news and my Taiwanese family and had nothing to do with the Philippines.
(5) and (6) are really nothing special and quite natural: We travels with our past. Let's say you'll fly to Mars tomorrow; while you are on Mars and see and experience all the Martian things, you will also definitely think about Earth and your family, friends, and lover(s), or even enemies sometimes, no?

Anyway, here they are:

Kilgore's tattoo

I've lived next to this amazing tattoo artist named Kilgore since I moved to Guam two years ago. She is moving to California. So I made this piece for her as a farewell gift.

ti alak ki Siraya

My senior uncle (my dad's oldest brother) just passed away. He was the last person in my family who farmed the land that was passed down to us. In a few days my family in Tainan, Taiwan will send him - his spirit - away. He was actually the person who revealed the sort-of family secret that we are Siraya. And that revelation has been VERY important to me. So I drew my 7-month-old baby here in front of the Siraya goddess - Alid (inside the clay pot is clean water in which rests the spirit of Alid) - as my send-off gift to my uncle.

creating characters for a documentary comics story

creating characters for a documentary comics story, if this makes sense. (It does. The characters are based on real people.)
給我和慢工出版社合作的紀錄漫畫<Halo-Halo 馬尼拉>裡的人物作一下設定
